Thousands Gather on Brahmaputra Banks in Dhubri to Celebrate Ashokastami with Rituals and Joy

Thousands Observe Ashokastami on Brahmaputra Banks in Dhubri with Sacred Dips, Prayers, and Fairs

Dhubri; April 05, 2025: The banks of the Brahmaputra in Dhubri came alive as thousands gathered to mark the sacred Ashokastami festival. Known for its spiritual depth and cultural richness, the festival is among the most revered in Eastern India.

Celebrations began early as people flocked to the river for the holy dip. From 9:35 AM to 12:53 PM, devotees immersed themselves in the Brahmaputra. This time is believed to grant ‘Brahma Pad Prapti’—a spiritual liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Pilgrims performed age-old rituals like hair offerings, ‘pindodan’, and ‘argh’ to honor their ancestors. Hymns, chants, and silent prayers filled the air. The atmosphere transcended boundaries of caste, class, and gender, creating a scene of pure unity and devotion.

The religious observance was followed by the grand Ashokastami Mela. The 15-day fair brought the riverbank to life with colors, sounds, and culture. Artisans, singers, and dancers presented local crafts and folk traditions. Stalls offered devotional items and regional delicacies, adding joy to the spiritual setting.

Devotees came from across Assam—including Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Barpeta, Chirang, and Kokrajhar—and even West Bengal. Many took part in sacred baths, ‘pindadan’, and ‘asthi visarjan’ (immersion of ashes), considering this day spiritually equal to a dip in the Ganga.

Ashokastami falls on the eighth day of the Shukla Paksha in the Chaitra month, during Chaitra Navratri. According to Hindu mythology, the day is linked to Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana, made possible by the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival symbolizes the end of sorrow—“ashoka”—and the victory of good over evil.

As evening approached, oil lamps flickered along the riverbank. Rhythmic chants and vibrant gatherings lit up not only the riverside but also the collective spirit of the community.

This year’s Ashokastami once again highlighted Assam’s timeless values of faith, unity, and cultural pride. More than just a festival, it stood as a vivid reminder of shared heritage and harmony.
