Assam Cabinet Approves ‘Muslim Marriage and Divorce Bill 2024’ to Strengthen Legal Safeguards
Guwahati August 22, 2024: The Assam Cabinet gave a significant nod to the ‘Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024’. This Bill, aimed at strengthening the institution of marriage within the Muslim community, seeks to enforce compulsory registration of all marriages and divorces, providing legal safeguards particularly to women and children.
The Cabinet’s decision marks a crucial step towards preventing the menace of child marriages by making it mandatory for all married couples to register their unions. The marriages will need to be solemnized as per the ritual, usage, and ceremony, and subsequently registered as required by law.
The Bill is aligned with the Civil Code of Procedure, ensuring that all related issues are thoroughly addressed. The Assam government aims to protect individuals from legal ambiguities and ensure the recognition of marriages and divorces, ultimately benefiting the common people.
The Bill will be presented in the Assam Legislative Assembly, where it is expected to receive further deliberation and approval.
