Potato Export Halted to Assam Causes Major Disruption at Chagolia Border
Dhubri, July 17, 2024: On the evening of July 16, the West Bengal Police halted hundreds of trucks carrying potatoes at the Assam-Bengal border, preventing their entry into Chagolia, Dhubri district. This action was taken following a directive from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reportedly banning the export of potatoes to Assam.
The blockade, enforced at the Boxirhat Police Check, West Bengal, has left many trucks stranded. According to reports, Chief Minister Banerjee’s directive aims to satisfy West Bengal’s potato demand before permitting any shipments to cross state lines. This measure was implemented in response to a significant rise in vegetable prices within West Bengal, prompting the state government to prioritize local supply.
As a consequence, truck drivers now face prolonged waits under hot weather conditions, which threaten to spoil tons of potatoes. These potatoes originate from various regions of West Bengal, including Falakata, Coochbehar, Dhupguri, Maynaguri, Salbari, and Mathabhanga of West Bengal. Potato exporters from West Bengal have voiced their concerns over the blockade, emphasizing the potential adverse impact on their businesses.
The blockade is expected to cause a price hike in Assam due to the disrupted supply chain affecting potato availability in the state. Stakeholders are eagerly awaiting further directives from authorities as the situation remains tense, with economic repercussions becoming increasingly evident on both sides of the border.
