Assam Cabinet Approves Implementation of Clause 6 Recommendations by Biplab Sarma Commission
Guwahati, September 04, 2024: In a significant development, the Assam Cabinet has given its approval to implement 57 out of the 67 recommendations put forth by the Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Commission. This commission, established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, was tasked with operationalizing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The Accord, a landmark agreement signed in 1985, aims to safeguard the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the indigenous Assamese people.
After thorough deliberations, the Cabinet endorsed these recommendations, which are slated for statewide implementation, excluding the Sixth Schedule areas and Barak Valley. In these regions, the recommendations will only be executed with the concurrence of local authorities and the community.
The Assam government has also formed a Group of Ministers to collaborate with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and other relevant organizations. This group will develop a detailed roadmap to ensure smooth and effective implementation. The Cabinet’s decision marks a crucial step towards fulfilling the long-standing demands of the Assamese people.
The implementation of these recommendations is scheduled to be completed by April 15, 2025, signaling a significant move towards upholding the provisions of the Assam Accord.
