Key Assam Cabinet Decisions: Infrastructure, Education, and Cultural Reforms
Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet approved several major initiatives aimed at infrastructure improvement, educational development, and welfare reforms. The decisions, taken during a key meeting, reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing public services and fostering growth.
The integrated terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport is set to handle over 13 million passengers annually. To ensure smooth connectivity, the Cabinet has sanctioned an additional ₹116.20 crore, raising the total project cost to ₹474 crore. The funds will focus on upgrading the road network between VIP Junction and Dharapur. This upgrade aims to streamline passenger movement and enhance travel experiences.
To boost career advancement for Assistant Fisheries Development Officers, the Cabinet amended the Assam Fisheries and Aquaculture Service Rules, 2024. The revised rules will enable up to 5% of fisheries cadre posts to be filled by officers from the Assistant Fishery Officer list, limited to 10 candidates. These changes aim to create better promotional avenues and encourage professional growth.
Aiming to preserve Assam’s cultural heritage, the Cabinet approved transforming 97 Sanskrit and Pali Tols into special schools. These institutions will now offer traditional subjects like Vedas, Astrology, and Vastu, alongside modern studies in Science and Mathematics. Nalbari Sanskrit College will also be restructured as a Sanskrit study and research hub under Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University. This move seeks to integrate cultural education with contemporary learning.
The Cabinet amended the Assam Literary Award and Pension Rules, 1974, now renamed the Assam Literary Pension and Award Rules, 1974. The revised rules aim to recognize senior writers aged 60 and above for their contributions. Awardees already receiving pensions will now get a one-time ₹50,000 honorarium instead of additional pensions. This ensures fair distribution of honors while encouraging literary excellence.
