Assam Cabinet Approves ₹1,272 Crore Investment to Revamp BVFCL Namrup-IV Plant

Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has announced key decisions to drive development across critical sectors, including agriculture, energy, and local governance. These resolutions aim to bolster economic growth and improve governance structures.

The Cabinet approved a major initiative to revitalize the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd (BVFCL), a Central PSU based in Namrup, Dibrugarh. BVFCL specializes in gas-based urea production, but its operations needed modernization to meet present demands.

To give the unit a new lease on life, an equity investment of 40%, valued at ₹1,272 crore, has been sanctioned. This funding will facilitate the construction of the Namrup-IV plant under a joint venture model.

In another major decision, the Cabinet approved converting Assam Government loans and grants to key power utility firms—APDCL, AEGCL, and APGCL—into equity. This move aligns with the Indian Government Accounting Standards (IGAS)-4 provisions.

The outstanding amounts to be converted include ₹397.39 crore for APDCL, ₹19.89 crore for AEGCL, and ₹520.38 crore for APGCL. This reform aims to stabilize the financial health of these companies and enhance power distribution in the state.

Lastly, the Cabinet has updated the list of villages under the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council. It has approved the inclusion of the “Sonowal part” in some notified villages, ensuring better governance for the local communities.

These transformative steps reflect the government’s commitment to economic progress and administrative efficiency.
