Assam Cabinet Announces Key Decisions After Umrangso Mine Tragedy

The Assam Cabinet convened on January 16, 2025, to address the recent Umrangso mine tragedy. It approved significant decisions to support victims’ families and prevent similar incidents.

To aid the bereaved, ₹10 lakh ex gratia will be given to the families of the four deceased individuals. Moreover, the next of kin of five missing persons will receive ₹10 lakh each, irrespective of whether they are found alive or dead.

The government has also initiated a judicial inquiry into the tragedy. Former Gauhati High Court Judge Anima Hazarika will lead the probe, focusing on accountability and negligence by officials, individuals, and institutions.

Additionally, the Cabinet emphasized the need to curb illegal mining practices. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be drafted to enforce a blanket ban on rat-hole mining across the state.

To ensure a thorough investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will examine the case based on the registered FIR. Retired Justice Anima Hazarika will oversee the SIT’s progress.

The Mines and Minerals Department has also been directed to shut down all rat-hole mines immediately. The department will collaborate with central agencies to enforce this measure effectively.
