Assam Cabinet Reshuffle: Key MLAs to Join as Ministers on December 7
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a significant cabinet expansion, scheduled for December 7 at 12 PM. Several MLAs will take the oath as new ministers, strengthening the state government’s leadership team.
Prominent among the appointees is Prasanta Phukan, a seasoned MLA from Dibrugarh. Phukan has been elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly multiple times, securing victories in 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. In the latest 2021 election, he achieved an impressive win with a margin of 38,005 votes. Previously, he served as the Chairperson of the Managing Committee of Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh. His extensive political experience adds weight to the cabinet’s expansion.
Another key figure is Kaushik Rai, representing the Lahkipur constituency. A member of the BJP, Rai won his seat during the 2021 Assembly elections. His inclusion aims to strengthen the party’s influence in southern Assam, a critical region for the state’s political landscape.
Krishnendu Paul, the MLA from Patharkandi, will also be sworn in. Representing the Patharkandi constituency in Karimganj district, Paul has served as MLA since 2016. He was re-elected in 2021, reflecting his strong voter base and consistent performance. His addition is expected to bolster representation from the Barak Valley region.
Completing the list of new ministers is Rupesh Gowala, the MLA from Doom Dooma. Gowala was elected in the 2021 Assembly elections and represents the tea community, a significant demographic in Assam. His induction is seen as a strategic move to address the community’s concerns and strengthen their trust in the government.
The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to further solidify the Assam government’s focus on inclusive and region-specific representation.
