Assam Cabinet Grants Financial Aid to Preserve Historic Raas Festivals

Assam Cabinet Approves Financial Aid for Traditional Raas Festivals, Eases Permission Rules

Guwahati: In a significant move to preserve and promote Assam’s cultural heritage, the Assam Cabinet has granted approval for financial assistance to committees organizing the state’s historic Raas festivals. Under this new initiative, each eligible Raas Committee will receive ₹25,000 in financial support to aid in the planning and execution of these culturally rich celebrations.

The scheme aims to benefit nearly 2,000 Raas festivals across Assam, specifically targeting those that do not involve idols, thereby encouraging the traditional form of Raas that is performed live. The Cabinet’s decision underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding Assam’s unique traditions while bolstering local festivals that reflect the state’s vibrant heritage.

Alongside the financial aid, the Cabinet has also introduced a waiver on the fees required to obtain official permission for organizing Raas Mahotsavs. This measure is expected to reduce the administrative burden on organizers, making it easier for communities to hold these festivals without additional costs. The fee waiver is applicable to all Raas Mahotsav events, further ensuring the accessibility and continuity of these traditional celebrations.

The Assam government’s initiatives reflect a broader mission to support and sustain cultural events that play a vital role in maintaining the state’s social fabric. By easing financial and bureaucratic hurdles, the state aims to provide a conducive environment for the traditional Raas festivals to flourish, enriching Assam’s cultural legacy for future generations.
