Assam Cabinet Announces Key Initiatives for Urban Development, Dairy Industry, and Nature-Based Industries
Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, in its latest meeting on January 10, 2025, approved a series of transformative decisions to drive development across key sectors. The initiatives aim to enhance urban planning, strengthen the dairy industry, and promote nature-based industries, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable growth.
To address evolving urban challenges, the Cabinet approved the restructuring of the Directorate of Town and Country Planning. This move focuses on solving urban flooding issues and meeting modern infrastructure needs. Notably, two new Joint Director posts and 46 specialized roles, such as GIS Experts and Specialist Architects, have been sanctioned to bolster the department’s capacity.
In a significant step towards a “dairy revolution,” the Cabinet sanctioned the establishment of two milk processing plants in Jorhat and Dibrugarh. Each plant will have a capacity of 100 TLPD (thousand liters per day). Additionally, similar facilities are planned for Dhemaji and Cachar, signaling a robust push for the sector’s expansion.
To support dairy farmers, the Cabinet approved a subsidy scheme offering ₹5 per liter via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This incentive will encourage farmers to sell their produce through dairy cooperative societies, improving their livelihoods significantly.
The Cabinet also prioritized nature-based industries to boost rural income and employment. It approved the notification of Oil Palm as a cash crop in Assam, encouraging its cultivation. Furthermore, guidelines were issued for the declaration of industrial estates to foster wood-based industries, promoting sustainable economic activities.
These progressive decisions by the Assam Cabinet underscore the state’s focus on development and sustainability. The initiatives promise enhanced urban infrastructure, a thriving dairy sector, and greater opportunities in nature-based industries, setting the stage for long-term growth.
