Assam Chief Minister Prioritizes Environmental Conservation in Meeting on Proposed Reserved Forest Areas
Guwahati, July 08, 2024: In a decisive move to bolster Assam’s environmental conservation efforts, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a meeting at Janata Bhavan today, focusing on the proposed reserved forest areas in the state. The discussion centered on strategies for enhancing green cover and preserving the environment, reflecting the government’s heightened commitment to addressing the challenges posed by global warming and biodiversity loss.
During the extensive discussion, Sarma instructed relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive examination of various issues pertaining to the proposed forest areas. This includes a detailed study of local settlements and land cover to ensure that the implementation of these initiatives is both positive and constructive.
“We are working on a comprehensive plan to enhance the green cover in Assam and earmark more areas as reserved forests,” stated the Chief Minister. He revealed plans to notify 30 proposed reserved forests (PRFs) as official reserve forests, a move anticipated to significantly bolster animal welfare efforts in the state.
Sarma highlighted the importance of harmonizing environmental conservation efforts with the needs of local communities. He urged officials to adopt measures that ensure the creation of reserved forests not only contributes to the state’s ecological well-being but also takes into account the livelihoods and interests of the residents.
