Assam Chief Minister Engages in Crucial Meetings with Union Ministers to Boost State’s Connectivity and Education
Desk Report, July 25, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a series of high-level meetings with Union Ministers, focusing on improving railway connectivity, accelerating infrastructure projects, and enhancing educational facilities in Assam.
In a comprehensive discussion with Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, CM Sarma deliberated on improving railway connectivity within Assam. They explored the possibility of establishing rail manufacturing entities in the state. The Union Minister showed a positive response to the request for direct train connectivity between Kamakhya and Ayodhya, benefiting devotees. Additionally, they discussed potential train routes between Assam’s Barak Valley and West Bengal via Bangladesh. CM Sarma was assured that these proposals would be prioritized by the Ministry of Railways. He commended the Union Minister for increasing the allocation for rail connectivity in Assam in the Union Budget 2024.
CM Sarma also met with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to review the status of ongoing infrastructure projects in Assam. Minister Gadkari agreed to personally monitor the Jorhat-Dibrugarh section of the National Highway, with a segment scheduled for completion this year. The discussions covered accelerating projects under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and other central road projects. They detailed the modalities for the timely completion of flagship projects, including the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, the underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh, and the Guwahati Ring Road.
In another significant meeting, CM Sarma engaged with Union Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan. Minister Pradhan consented to the commencement of courses at IIM-Guwahati from the next academic year. They discussed the Government of India’s support for Assam under the PM-USHA scheme, aimed at financing state institutions. The Union Minister agreed to measures for strengthening the capacity of Teacher Training Institutes and discussed augmenting technical education in Assam.
These meetings underscore Assam’s commitment to advancing its infrastructure and educational landscape, ensuring rapid development and improved connectivity for its citizens.
