Assam CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Major Development Initiatives During Barak Valley Visit
Desk Report, August 25, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his visit to Barak Valley from August 22 to 24, 2024, unveiled a series of development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and road connectivity in the region. These announcements were made during meetings with over 50 delegations and individuals, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing local concerns and driving regional growth.
In a significant boost to healthcare services in Barak Valley, the Chief Minister announced the sanction of ₹12 crore for the Cachar Cancer Hospital to purchase a second LINAC machine, which is crucial for cancer treatment. Furthermore, Dr. Sarma instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi to identify a suitable location for constructing a new medical college, which is expected to enhance medical education and healthcare accessibility in the region.
The government has approved the Hailakandi and Karimganj Water Supply Scheme, with an investment exceeding ₹100 crore. Tenders for the project have already been issued, marking the start of a significant upgrade in the region’s water supply infrastructure. Additionally, the Chief Minister sanctioned ₹14 crore for the repair of 13 roads in Silchar town, ensuring their completion before Durga Puja. A further ₹30 crore has been allocated for widening and drainage improvements on the Rangirkhari to SMCH road, enhancing road safety and traffic flow.
Several road development projects were also highlighted. The Kumbhirgram to Udharbond road will undergo repairs, while roads in Karimganj and Hailakandi municipal areas will be improved with investments of ₹16 crore and ₹9 crore, respectively. The Rangirkhari to Sonai Bari Ghat road, covering a distance of 6.5 km, will be upgraded by NHIDCL at a cost of ₹37 crore. Another notable project includes the improvement of an 8.4 km stretch from Ramnagar to Rangpur, with an investment of ₹6.25 crore.
One of the most ambitious projects discussed during the visit was the plan for a 7 km elevated road with a double-decker flyover in Silchar, estimated to cost ₹1200 crore. The project is set to be executed in two phases, with the first phase covering Capital Point to Chittaranjan Statue (3.5 km) and the second phase extending from Capital Point to Ramnagar (3.5 km). This project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to Barak Valley underscored the Assam government’s focus on regional development through targeted investments in critical infrastructure and healthcare. These initiatives are poised to transform the region, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for residents.
