Assam CM Launches Mission Basundhara 3.0 to Grant Land Rights to Indigenous People

Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated Mission Basundhara 3.0 today at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra. This new phase of the mission aims to grant land rights to indigenous people of Assam, a bold step that has attracted both praise and criticism from various political groups.

During the launch, Sarma acknowledged the concerns raised by opposition parties, particularly the Congress and AIUDF. He addressed the controversy, stating, “The opposition political parties criticised us, but we have clarified that Mission Basundhara is an initiative focused on ensuring land rights for the indigenous communities of Assam.”

Mission Basundhara 3.0 introduces several reforms designed to make land revenue services more accessible. Key among these is Digidoc, a digital directory system for non-registrable and optionally registrable documents, aimed at enhancing transparency and reducing processing times for citizens. This system is expected to modernize land administration in Assam and streamline related services.

The mission also focuses on improving the land settlement process, making it more transparent, efficient, and citizen-friendly. These efforts include the digitization of land records, facilitating easy access to land-related services for the state’s underserved populations, such as the poor, Adivasis, and tea garden workers.

Despite the opposition’s criticism, the Assam government remains committed to its mission of empowering the state’s indigenous communities through land ownership, marking a significant policy step in addressing land rights issues.
