Desk Report, February 01, 2024: In a monumental step towards safeguarding Assam’s cultural legacy, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the “Ban-Phi and Bhumipujan” program for the “Construction of the Historical Rang Ghar Beautification Project” at the Rang Ghar Beautification Project Area in Sivasagar. Constructed 280 years ago, Rang Ghar stands as Asia’s oldest surviving amphitheatre, bearing immense historical and cultural significance for Assam.
Chief Minister Sarma, expressing his unwavering commitment to preserving this living monument for another millennium, sought the blessings of ancestors as the beautification endeavors commenced. Addressing the gathering, he underscored the pivotal role played by Swargadeo Rudra Singha in shaping Assamese sports, art, and culture through the creation of rangghars.
Allocating a substantial budget of Rs 140 crores for the Rang Ghar Beautification Project, Chief Minister Sarma outlined a projected completion date of 2026. He further announced significant developmental initiatives for Sivasagar, including the conversion of Sivasagar College into a university, set for completion in the near future. The construction of Sivasagar Medical College is scheduled to commence next month.
Additionally, a Rs 187 crore project aimed at improving the road to Nazira at the Dikhoumukh ferry ghat is in the pipeline. In a noteworthy move, Chief Minister Sarma revealed plans to relocate the Sivasagar jail next year, emphasizing the government’s dedication to infrastructural development.

Expressing optimism about Sivasagar’s positive transformation, he declared, “The victory of development, karma yajna, has begun in Sivasagar.” Reflecting on Assam’s progress over the past three years, Chief Minister Sarma lauded the state’s journey, asserting, “In the absence of an atmosphere of agitation, Assam has moved on to 30 years. It is our time to stand on our own feet.”
Commending the government’s efficient approach, he stated, “No one imagined that this government speaks less and does more work.” Advocating for science over movement, Chief Minister Sarma envisioned a harmonious Assam and urged a shift towards a vibrant environment without agitation. “Our aim is to make Assam one of the best states in India,” he affirmed.
