Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Major Welfare Schemes for Tea Tribe Community

Guwahati, August 22, 2024: In a significant move to uplift the Tea Tribe community in Assam, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a series of welfare initiatives during his interventions in the Assam Legislative Assembly today. The measures include a 3% employment reservation for the Tea Tribe community in various government exams, such as teaching, ADRE, and healthcare, along with the construction of 100 additional high schools, bringing the total to 200. These steps are aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and job prospects for this historically marginalized community.

Further elaborating on the government’s commitment, CM Sarma outlined the allocation of ₹700 crore by the Central Government for the construction and upgrading of schools and hospitals in tea garden-dominated areas. Additionally, the government will develop 10 degree colleges and ensure the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in all tea estates. These initiatives are designed to address critical infrastructure gaps and improve the overall quality of life for tea garden workers and their families.

To support the economic stability of the Tea Tribe community, the Assam government will also provide financial assistance to approximately 8 lakh tea garden workers over the next three years. This aid will be supplemented by the organization of a Mega Jhumur Festival, featuring over 8,000 dancers, to celebrate the cultural heritage of the Tea Tribe community. These comprehensive measures reflect the government’s dedication to fostering the welfare and development of this crucial segment of Assam’s population.
