Dry Day Declared Ahead of Second Phase of Lok Sabha Elections in Assam
Guwahati, April 24, 2024: In preparation for the second phase of voting in the ongoing Lok Sabha general elections, authorities in Assam have imposed a ban on the sale of alcohol in certain constituencies. The State Election Commission of Assam has declared a dry day in constituencies including Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu, Karimganj, Silchar, and Nagaon, where polling is scheduled to take place on April 26.
The prohibition on the sale of alcohol in these constituencies will come into effect from 5 pm on April 24 and will remain in force until the conclusion of polling on the evening of April 26. This measure aims to maintain peace and order during the electoral process.
Additionally, the state polling body has announced another dry day on June 4, coinciding with the counting of votes, which marks the culmination of the Lok Sabha elections. This decision underscores the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly electoral process.
Notably, these elections in Assam are the first to be conducted following a recent delimitation exercise, resulting in significant changes to electoral boundaries. As such, the implementation of measures like dry days reflects the meticulous planning and efforts undertaken to facilitate smooth and transparent elections in the state.
