Desk Report, March 22, 2024: In a shocking turn of events, a Dholai Fire and Emergency Service Station officer in Assam’s Cachar district was arrested on Friday for accepting a bribe. Sub Officer Basanta Sinha, who was in charge of the Dholai Fire and Emergency Service Station, was caught red-handed.
The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption in Assam received a complaint alleging that Sinha had demanded a bribe of Rs. 25,000 from a complainant. The bribe was related to the issuance of a Fire Safety No Objection Certificate (NOC).
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant promptly approached the Directorate to take legal action against Sinha. Responding to the complaint, a team from the Anti-Corruption cell set up a trap near the Nagatilla Fire and Emergency Service Station in Silchar.
Sinha was apprehended in the residence of one of his colleagues near Nagatilla. He was caught immediately after accepting Rs. 8,000, which was part of the demanded bribe from the complainant.
The tainted bribe money was recovered from Sinha’s possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses. A case has been registered at the ACB Police Station under ACB P.S. Case No. 30/2024, invoking Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
