Flood Situation in Assam Shows Improvement, Affected Population Declines
Guwahati, July 16, 2024: The flood situation in Assam has shown significant improvement, with the number of affected individuals decreasing to 511,120 as of Monday. Despite this positive development, the death toll in the ongoing second wave since May has sadly risen to 96. Currently, 17 districts remain affected, and water levels in major rivers are stabilizing or receding.
Tragically, two minors from Dhubri district lost their lives in the recent flooding. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that the count of flood-affected people dropped from 597,000 on Sunday evening to 511,000 by Monday evening.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday to review the flood situation and assured him of central support. Despite some rivers, like the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat in Jorhat district, Tezpur, and Dhubri, along with the Burhidihing and Disang rivers, still flowing above the danger mark as of Monday morning, the latest bulletin from the Central Water Commission indicates a general trend of stabilization or decline in water levels over the past 24 hours.
Hon'ble Home Minister @AmitShah Ji telephoned me this morning. I briefed him with a status update on the Assam floods. He has reiterated augmenting all possible assistance from the Government of India to help the State deal with this situation.

We are grateful for the continued…
The ongoing efforts by local and national authorities aim to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide necessary relief to the affected populations. The situation is being closely monitored, with continuous updates expected as water levels fluctuate and recovery operations proceed.
