Assam Forest Department’s Crackdown on Wildlife Trafficking: Arrests and Seizures Across Regions
Guwahati: The Assam Forest Department has ramped up its efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade in recent days. Multiple operations across various forest divisions have led to significant seizures and arrests, highlighting the department’s unwavering commitment to protecting wildlife.
In a patrol inside Behali Wildlife Sanctuary under the Sonitpur East Division, forest officials arrested Nabam Tama, 35, from Arunachal Pradesh. He was found with a deer carcass, whose species is yet to be identified, and a single-barrel firearm. However, two of his accomplices managed to escape into the dense forest.
Separately, a joint operation conducted by the Doomdooma Forest Division and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau near Badlabhata Tea Estate in Tinsukia district led to the recovery of pangolin skin, leopard skin, and sambar deer antlers. The authorities arrested three individuals in connection with the case. They were identified as Ajit Moran, Dipen Chetia, and Mantu Moran.
Another joint operation was carried out at Dwifang Chowk under the Dhansiri Forest Division in Udalguri. Officials seized a live pangolin from a group of suspected wildlife smugglers. One accused, Dinesh Basumatary, 56, was apprehended, and two two-wheelers were seized during the raid. However, four other suspects managed to flee the scene.
