Assam Government Issues Extensive Advisory in Preparation for Cyclone Remal
Guwahati, May 27, 2024: In anticipation of the impending impact of Cyclone Remal, the Assam Government has mobilized significant measures to safeguard the welfare and security of its populace. With the cyclonic storm having made landfall on May 26 in West Bengal and Bangladesh and its projected trajectory moving towards the Northeastern region, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned of heightened rainfall and wind speeds across Assam and adjoining states.
The IMD’s forecast warns of extremely heavy rainfall specifically over Assam, with an orange alert issued for several districts including Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, and others. Additionally, a red alert has been declared for districts such as Chirang, Goalpara, and Karimganj, indicating the likelihood of exceptionally heavy rainfall.
In response to these warnings, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has intensified preparations in collaboration with various governmental departments, agencies, and district administrations. Notably, NDRF teams have been strategically positioned in vulnerable areas, including Cachar, Bongaigaon, and Dibrugarh.
To mitigate potential risks, the ASDMA has instructed District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) to assess and regulate boat operations, particularly along major rivers like the Brahmaputra and Barak. Moreover, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has undertaken proactive measures such as desilting major river channels, deploying specialized machinery, and closely monitoring historically inundated areas.
Furthermore, preemptive measures for the evacuation of susceptible populations from landslide-prone regions have been advised in districts including Guwahati Kamrup (M), Dima Hasao, and Karbi Anglong. The Health Department has been alerted to ensure the availability of emergency medical supplies and facilities, adhering to established protocols.
In the realm of infrastructure and public safety, various departments including Power, Forest, Panchayat, Rural Development, and Irrigation have enacted measures ranging from construction monitoring to community engagement and flood management.
In line with these preparations, an advisory has been issued to the public, emphasizing precautions such as avoiding waterlogged areas, seeking sturdy shelter, securing agricultural assets, and adhering to safety protocols during thunderstorms and lightning activities. Additionally, farmers and fishermen are urged to exercise caution, while special attention is directed towards vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and persons with disabilities.
As the region braces for the impending cyclonic impact, citizens are urged to remain vigilant, heed official warnings, and prioritize safety measures outlined by local authorities. In the face of adversity, collective preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines are paramount to ensuring the well-being of communities across Assam.
