Gauhati High Court to Reconsider Assam Government’s Plea on Panchayat Election Notification
Guwahati: The Assam government has taken a significant step to challenge the Gauhati High Court’s directive delaying Panchayat elections. The state government filed a special petition requesting the reconsideration of the court’s earlier order.
The High Court had previously instructed that no notification for Panchayat elections be issued until January 9. This directive came amidst ongoing disputes related to the re-determination of constituencies, which had prompted multiple petitions seeking a delay in the elections.
In its petition, the government urged the court to revisit its decision, arguing the urgency of conducting elections in constituencies that have not yet been notified. Responding to this plea, the court accepted the petition and allowed opposing parties time until January 6 to submit their responses.
Furthermore, the High Court directed that copies of the government’s petition be made available to the opposing parties on the same day. This step ensures transparency and expedites the legal process.
The ongoing disputes over constituency boundaries have remained a contentious issue, leading to significant delays in the election process. With the court’s recent decision to consider the government’s petition, the next steps depend on the responses from the opposing parties and subsequent court orders.
For now, the Assam government must await the High Court’s ruling to determine whether elections can proceed in areas unaffected by the disputes. The outcome of this legal battle holds substantial implications for local governance and democratic processes in the state.
