Assam Government Issues Strict Directives to Curb Private Practice by Government Doctors During Duty Hours
Guwahati, June 30, 2024: In a move to tighten regulations and ensure dedicated service delivery, the Assam government has issued stringent directives to prevent government doctors from engaging in private practice during their official duty hours. This decision was communicated through a letter from the Medical Education and Research Department to the Health and Family Welfare Department.
The directives outlined in the letter include several key instructions aimed at ensuring compliance and accountability:
1. Instructions to Private Health Institutions: The Director of Health Services, Assam, has been tasked with instructing all private health institutions registered under the Clinical Establishment Act to prevent government doctors from practicing in their establishments during official duty hours.
2. Periodic Inspections: The Joint Director of Health Services, Assam, is to conduct regular inspections of private clinical establishments to verify adherence to these directives.
3. Compliance Accountability: The responsibility for ensuring compliance lies with the private hospitals and nursing homes. In case of violations, appropriate legal actions will be taken against the offending establishments.
4. Monthly Reporting: A monthly report of the inspections conducted must be submitted to the government, along with recommendations for any necessary actions.
These measures are part of the Assam government’s broader effort to improve healthcare services and ensure that government doctors are fully available to serve the public during their designated working hours. The government expects these steps to significantly reduce instances of doctors neglecting their official duties in favor of private practice.
