SSA Teachers: Assam Government Initiates Recruitment Drive for 35,000 Regular Positions
Guwahati, June 28, 2024: In a significant move aimed at bolstering educational stability in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on June 27 a new initiative to regularize 35,000 Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers currently working on contracts. This initiative comes in response to a Supreme Court order that prohibits the direct regularization of contract teachers through cabinet decisions.
“We have decided to open 35,000 new teaching positions under SSA, specifically inviting current contract teachers to apply,” stated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press briefing. He emphasized that once these positions are filled, the existing 35,000 contractual teaching posts will be phased out.
The initiative underscores the state government’s dedication to improving education quality and addressing longstanding job security concerns among SSA teachers. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that the state cabinet’s decision aims to promptly resolve the enduring issue surrounding SSA teachers, with the recruitment process slated to conclude within 4 to 5 months.
Additionally, addressing concerns beyond education reform, the cabinet has also taken steps to mitigate heavy fines imposed on two-wheelers and three-wheelers by various enforcement agencies. “Moving forward, fines for two-wheelers will be restricted to helmet violations, while three-wheelers will face penalties only after repeated offenses,” clarified Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He acknowledged that such fines, despite contributing minimally to state revenue, have disproportionately burdened economically vulnerable vehicle owners.
