Assam Declares Internet Shutdown on October 27 for Recruitment Exams

Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a state-wide mobile internet shutdown on October 27, 2024, to ensure a fair and transparent recruitment examination process. This decision, taken by the Government of Assam, aims to prevent any attempts at malpractice and ensure public safety during the exams.

A whopping 8,27,130 candidates will participate in the recruitment exam for HSLC level posts, and 5,52,002 candidates will sit for the Class VIII level posts. The exams are scheduled to take place in 1484 centers for the first half (from 9:00 am to 11:30 am) and 808 centers in the second half (from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm) across 28 districts of Assam.

In order to avoid misuse of mobile devices and ensure the fairness of the examination process, the government has invoked the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. This temporary shutdown will affect mobile internet, Mobile Wi-Fi, and mobile data services from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on the day of the exams. However, voice calls and broadband connections will remain operational during this period to minimize inconvenience for the general public.

The government took this step after identifying the risk of rumor-mongering and cheating via social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube. Such platforms have been used in the past to disrupt public examinations, and this measure is intended to close loopholes that could undermine the fairness of the process.

Authorities have warned that any violation of this order will lead to punishment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws. The government urges all citizens to comply with the order to ensure a smooth and secure examination process.
