Assam Sets Guinness Record with Grand ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ Folk Dance Event

Guwahati; February 25, 2025: Assam created history with ‘Jhumoir Binandini,’ a record-breaking Jhumur folk dance performance at Sarusajai Stadium. Over 8,500 dancers from the state’s tea garden community showcased their rich cultural heritage, aiming for a Guinness World Record. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the grand event, emphasizing Assam’s deep-rooted connection to tea culture.

Draped in traditional red-and-white sarees, the dancers performed with synchronized footwork and graceful movements. The beats of the madal drum and folk melodies in the Sadri language echoed through the stadium, narrating tales of love, struggle, and resilience. The performance highlighted Assam’s tea workers, who have long been the backbone of the state’s tea industry.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi expressed a personal connection with Assam’s tea culture. He praised the community’s contributions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving Assamese heritage. He also emphasized the historic recognition of Assamese as a classical language, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people.

Jhumur dance, traditionally performed at festivals and social gatherings across Assam’s tea estates, represents the emotions and aspirations of the tea tribe communities. The energetic footwork, circular formations, and rhythmic beats of the madal, flute, and cymbals define this vibrant folk dance. Performers wore white sarees with bold red borders, while male musicians donned short lungis, shirts, and gamocha turbans.

Beyond cultural celebration, ‘Jhumoir Binandini’ was strategically linked to the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit. By showcasing Jhumur globally, Assam aims to attract investment in its tea industry, boost cultural tourism, and drive economic growth. The event marked a significant step in merging tradition with progress, redefining Assam’s cultural and industrial landscape.
