Assam Government Introduces Reforms in Transport Department to Boost Road Safety and Efficiency
Guwahati, August 17, 2024: The Assam Government has unveiled a series of transformative reforms in the Transport Department, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing corruption. These initiatives are focused on minimizing direct interactions between the public and officials, thereby cutting down opportunities for harassment.
Key Features of the Initiative
1. Modernizing Transportation: The reforms will introduce Automated Driving Testing Tracks (ADTT), Automated Testing Stations (ATS), and Accredited Driver Training Centres (ADTC) across Assam, streamlining vehicle testing and driver training processes.
2. Collaboration for Success: The success of these reforms will hinge on effective collaboration between district officials and private stakeholders, ensuring smooth implementation and management.
3. Vision for the Future: The ultimate objective is to create safer roads and cultivate a new generation of well-trained drivers across the state.
Setting Up Automated Testing Stations
1. Automated Vehicle Testing: The state is advancing vehicle fitness testing by adopting automation, which will enhance accuracy and efficiency in the process.
2. Operational ATS Locations: Currently, Automated Testing Stations are operational in Kamrup Rural and at the National Automotive Testing and R&D (NATrip) infrastructure project in Silchar.
3. Upcoming ATS Locations: New ATS locations are planned for ISBT Guwahati, North Salmara, Biswanath, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh, under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
4. District Commissioners’ Role: District commissioners are tasked with ensuring timely approvals and monitoring the progress of these projects.
Establishing Infrastructure
1. ADTC and ADTT in Every District: The initiative includes setting up driver training centers and automated testing tracks in every district, significantly enhancing the scope and effectiveness of driver education across Assam.
2. Land Requirements: Each ADTC will require a minimum of two acres of highland or suitable government buildings to provide comprehensive driver training.
3. Driving Training Schools: New driving schools, affiliated with ADTTs, will focus on delivering thorough driver education, equipping drivers with the essential skills needed for safe driving.
This forward-thinking approach to driver training and vehicle testing is expected to set new standards for road safety and transportation efficiency in Assam, marking a significant step forward in the state’s transportation sector.
