Ambush on Assam Rifles Convoy Leads to Arrests of Overground Workers
Desk Report, April 24, 2024: In a significant development, authorities have made headway in the investigation into the recent ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy in the Margherita area of Changlang Road, Tinsukia, Assam. The incident, which occurred on April 16, 2024, involved a convoy consisting of one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and 16 other force personnel traveling in three vehicles, including one TATA 1212 and two TATA 407 trucks.
The ambush, orchestrated by underground groups, resulted in a barrage of heavy fire directed at the convoy. However, swift and decisive action by the Assam Rifles team led to a retaliatory response, prompting the insurgents to flee the scene, utilizing the cover of dense forest and challenging terrain.
Following the incident, Margherita Police Station initiated Case No. 38/2024 under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act, 1959. During the course of the investigation, Tinsukia Police, in a joint operation with 31 Assam Rifles, 23 Assam Rifles, and Arunachal Pradesh Police, apprehended several individuals believed to have provided support to the insurgents.
Among those arrested are Mankhul Mossang, Mannong Mossang, and Jhonwang Hakum, all hailing from Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh. Investigations have revealed that Jhonwang Hakum played a pivotal role in providing logistical support and guidance to the ULFA cadres involved in executing the ambush. Meanwhile, Mannong Mossang and Mankhul Mossang facilitated the escape of the ULFA members and provided crucial local support.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that one ULFA cadre succumbed to injuries sustained during the retaliatory firing by the Assam Rifles team and was buried by his associates in a nearby forest area. Efforts are underway to recover the deceased cadre’s body and facilitate its return to the family.
Additionally, it has come to light that at least three ULFA cadres sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and have since been evacuated to ULFA camps in Myanmar. The three accused individuals apprehended in connection with the incident have provided crucial information regarding the identities of the ULFA cadres involved in the ambush.
Law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with Assam Rifles, the Army, and Arunachal Pradesh Police, are currently conducting a joint search operation to apprehend the remaining perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The arrests signify a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and maintain peace and security in the region.
