Assam Government Unifies SEBA and AHSEC to Form Assam State School Education Board
Guwahati, September 08, 2024: The Assam government officially announced the merger of the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) on Sunday. This step has created the unified “Assam State School Education Board.” The move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to modernize the state’s education system.
In an official notification, the Governor of Assam appointed R.C. Jain, IAS (Retd.), as the Chairman of the new board. Additionally, Rukma Gohain Barua was named Vice-Chairman. Both appointments will last three years or until the individuals reach the age of 70, whichever comes first.
Jain and Barua have now been relieved of their previous roles as Chairmen of SEBA and AHSEC, effective immediately. This shift aims to streamline the management of school education under one body.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the significance of this merger. He emphasized that the new unified board will play a key role in advancing Assam’s education sector. “In a major milestone towards taking our education sector to new heights and in conformity with NEP 2020, we have merged SEBA & AHSEC to form a unified Assam State School Education Board,” Sarma stated. He also noted that the board’s focus will be on shaping education to meet the needs of the 21st century.
This merger is expected to bring about significant improvements, ensuring that school education in Assam is more synchronized and prepared for future challenges.
