Assam Sets Benchmark in PDS Foodgrain Distribution with 10-Day Cycle Implementation
Guwahati, August 11, 2024: Assam has emerged as a leader in the Public Distribution System (PDS), becoming the first state in India to implement a 10-day cycle for the lifting and distribution of food grains. This initiative, introduced in November 2023, ensures a 97% plus online distribution rate of food grains, surpassing the national average of 94%.
Under the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), food grains are lifted between the 20th and 30th or 31st of each month and distributed from the 1st to the 10th of the following month. This designated period, known as Anna Sewa Din, is part of the broader ‘PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana’ scheme.
The key achievements of Anna Sewa Din include a strict timeline for food grain lifting, minimizing the risk of diversion by closely monitoring the process. The fixed distribution days ensure a predictable and reliable delivery schedule. Additionally, online distribution has significantly increased, enhancing transparency and reducing the chances of misappropriation by authenticating beneficiaries.
This initiative by Assam reflects its commitment to improving food security and ensuring that benefits reach the intended recipients efficiently and transparently.
