Renowned Assamese Actress Aimee Baruah Dazzles at Cannes in Traditional Muga Silk Mekhela Sador
Desk Report, May 20, 2024: Esteemed Assamese actress Aimee Baruah graced the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival in a striking muga silk mekhela sador, masterfully designed by Momita Sharma. The ensemble, adorned with the ancient Assamese motifs of Goj Bota and Gam Kharu, showcased the rich cultural heritage and exquisite craftsmanship of Assam.
The Goj Bota design, a historical pattern from Assam, features intricate floral and geometric shapes that trace back to the Ahom Dynasty. Traditionally, muga silk was a luxury reserved for the elite, a status it maintains today. This design symbolizes the profound cultural and natural beauty of Assam. Complementing this, the Gum Kharu motif represents prosperity and protection, deeply embedded in Assamese cultural heritage.
Momita Sharma, the creative force behind this creation, skillfully incorporated these classic designs into the muga silk fabric, employing five different threads and colors. The intricate patterns were crafted with a blend of Eri, cotton, and Guna yarn, underscoring the artistry and meticulous craftsmanship inherent in Assam’s handloom industry.
Momita Sharma’s journey into the world of handloom is marked by a deep-seated passion for Assamese culture and traditional weaving techniques. Her boutique, Juthika—named in honor of her grandmother—was established on March 13, 2021, and embodies her vision and dedication to preserving Assamese handloom traditions. The weaving of her creations takes place in her workshop located in Bhetapara, where each piece is meticulously crafted.
Momita’s dedication to the intricate process of weaving and her love for traditional fabrics is evident in every creation from Juthika. Her commitment to celebrating and preserving Assamese culture shines through, offering a testament to the rich heritage and artistry of Assam.
Aimee Baruah’s appearance at Cannes not only highlighted her personal elegance but also brought international recognition to Assam’s cultural and artisanal legacy.
