Assamese Filmmaker Rima Das Invited to Join Academy’s Class of 2024
Guwahati, June 27, 2024: Assamese Filmmaker Rima Das, celebrated for her poignant contributions to cinema, has received a prestigious invitation to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, marking her induction into the esteemed Class of 2024. Known for her directorial prowess and multi-faceted roles as a writer, producer, cinematographer, and editor, Das has garnered international acclaim for her evocative storytelling and profound exploration of human experiences.
Hailing from Kalardiya village near Chhaygaon, Assam, Das emerged onto the global stage with her breakthrough film “Village Rockstars” and subsequent works such as “Bulbul Can Sing”. These films not only captured the essence of rural life in India but also resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, earning her over 70 awards across more than 120 esteemed film festivals. Notably, “Village Rockstars” was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in 2019, further solidifying Das’s reputation as a trailblazing filmmaker.
Beyond her directorial achievements, Das has been a steadfast advocate for gender equality in cinema, serving as a Brand Ambassador for the Toronto International Film Festival’s ‘Share Her Journey’ campaign. Her commitment to authentic storytelling and nuanced character portrayals has set a benchmark in Indian cinema, influencing a new generation of filmmakers.
Das joins a diverse cohort of 487 new members invited from 57 countries by the Academy, reflecting a global celebration of cinematic excellence. This class, comprising 44% women and 41% representatives of underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, underscores the Academy’s commitment to inclusivity and artistic merit in film.
With her induction into the Academy, Das not only enriches the global cinematic landscape but also reinforces India’s vibrant presence in the world of filmmaking.
