DoT Warns Mobile Users of International Call Scams on WhatsApp
Desk Report, March 30, 2024: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) warns mobile users to be careful with international calls on WhatsApp. On Friday, the Ministry of Communications gave a heads-up. They told users not to share any info if they get calls that threaten to cut off their mobile service. Some people pretend to be from the government and say you’re involved in illegal activities.
“Cyber criminals make these calls to scare you and get your personal details. They want to commit cybercrimes and financial frauds,” the warning stated. The DoT hasn’t given permission for anyone to make such calls. They ask everyone to be alert and not to share any info if they get these calls.
More and more people are reporting fake calls from people claiming to be from DoT. They say they’ll deactivate your mobile or accuse you of doing bad things. Scammers often use WhatsApp calls with foreign numbers, especially ones starting with +92, which is Pakistan’s code, to fool people.
The DoT wants the public to report these fake calls on the Sanchar Saathi website. You can use the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ feature on www.sancharsaathi.gov.in. If you report these calls early, the DoT can stop them from using telecom services for fraud and cybercrimes.
If you’ve already been tricked by a financial scam or cybercrime, report it at www.cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 for cybercrimes. Earlier this year, the DoT blocked more than 1,500 callers, even international ones, involved in threats and cybercrimes.
