Assam Congress Faces Setback as Bharat Chandra Narah Resigns Over Denial of Ticket to Wife
Desk Report, March 25, 2024: In a big setback for the Assam Congress, Bharat Chandra Narah has quit the party. This comes right after he left his job as the head of the party’s media team, showing there’s unhappiness within the party.
Narah wrote a short letter to the National Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge. In it, he said he’s quitting the Indian National Congress right away. He decided to leave because the party didn’t give a ticket to his wife, Ranee Narah, for the Lakhimpur area in the elections.
Ranee used to be a Member of Parliament and a junior minister when the UPA 2 government was in charge. She lost the chance to Uday Shankar Hazarika, who recently joined the Congress from the BJP.

Before going to Delhi to meet the top party leaders, Narah gave his resignation letter to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief, Bhupen Kumar Borah. Even after this setback, Narah said he’s still committed to the party.
This makes things harder for the Congress, especially with members leaving for the BJP. Ranee Narah’s supporters really want her to run in the elections. They talk about her past wins and time in Parliament.
Ranee won the Lakhimpur seat in 2009. She was also in the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
