Biswanath, January 19, 2024 – In a recent press conference, Biswanath District Sahitya Sabha addressed concerns about the insufficient use of the Assamese language in Government Offices and on business signboards within the district. The Sabha members emphasized the importance of promoting and preserving the state language.
During the press conference, the Sahitya Sabha revealed that there is still a noticeable deficit in the appropriate use of the Assamese language in various Government Offices. They specifically highlighted the need for Assamese to be prominently used in the Block Development Office, Circle Office, and all Government establishments.
Furthermore, the Sahitya Sabha expressed concern over the prevalent use of English over Assamese on business signboards. While they acknowledged the acceptance of English, they urged that Assamese should take precedence as the state language.
To address these language concerns, the Sabha has submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner, requesting immediate directives for the increased use of Assamese in Government Offices and businesses.
This initiative follows a trend in the District where, two months prior, Durga Puja mandaps displaying signboards in languages other than Assamese were removed by local organizations, which also issued warnings against such practices.
The press conference was attended by key members of Biswanath District Sahitya Sabha, including President Pradip Kumar Sharma, Secretary Shobhan Chandra Shaikia, Executive President Molan Bora, Convener Dr. Sanjeev Upadhyay, and members of the Mother Language and State Language Use Sub-Committee. This move reflects the Sabha’s commitment to preserving the cultural and linguistic heritage of Assam.
