BJP Announces Candidates for Samaguri, Dholai, and Behali in Assam By-Polls
Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its candidates for three key constituencies ahead of the upcoming by-polls in Assam. Contesting from Samaguri, Dholai, and Behali, the BJP named Diplu Ranjan Sarma for Samaguri, Nihar Ranjan Das for Dholai, and Diganta Ghatowar for Behali.
This announcement comes shortly after the Election Commission of India (ECI) confirmed the dates for the by-polls. Five Assembly seats in Assam will go to the polls on November 13, with results expected on November 23. The seats up for election are Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri.
These constituencies became vacant earlier this year after several sitting MLAs took on parliamentary roles following the Lok Sabha elections. This includes two MLAs from the ruling BJP—one being a cabinet minister—as well as representatives from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL), and one from the opposition Congress.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya, who represented the Dholai Assembly seat, and Ranjit Dutta from Behali, secured victories in the Cachar and Tezpur parliamentary constituencies, respectively. Veteran AGP leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury won the Barpeta seat, who was representing Bongaigaon. Meanwhile, UPPL’s Joyanta Basumatary, former MLA from Sidli, claimed the Kokrajhar constituency. Congress’s Rakibul Hussain, a five-time legislator from Samaguri, secured the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat with a significant margin.
In the upcoming by-polls, BJP will contest the Samaguri, Dholai, and Behali seats, while AGP will run for Bongaigaon, and UPPL for Sidli.
