BJP Secures Third Term in Arunachal Pradesh; SKM Retains Power in Sikkim
Desk Report, June 03, 2024: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. Simultaneously, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) secured a second term in Sikkim. Elections took place on April 19 for 60 assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh and 32 seats in Sikkim.
According to the Election Commission, the BJP claimed victory in Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive term by winning 46 seats. Results were announced for 50 of the 60 assembly seats, as the party had already won ten seats unopposed. Chief Minister Pema Khandu was among the ten unopposed winners.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the National People’s Party (NPP) secured five seats. The People’s Party of Arunachal won two seats, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) took three. The Congress managed only one seat, while Independent candidates won three constituencies.
In Sikkim, the SKM, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, secured 31 seats. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) won only one seat. Tamang credited the victory to the hard work of SKM workers and the people’s trust in his government. He expressed gratitude in a Facebook post and at a gathering in Gangtok’s Paljor Stadium, pledging to give 100% effort in the next five years.
The Ajit Pawar-led NCP announced its victory in three Arunachal Pradesh Assembly seats, with newly elected MLAs Nikhil Kamin, Likha Soni, and Toku Tatum. NCP Working President Praful Patel highlighted this as a significant step towards achieving National Party status, referencing previous victories in Maharashtra and Nagaland.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), stated that the BJP’s sweeping victory in Arunachal Pradesh is indicative of the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll results. He emphasized that the results reflect the people’s faith in the party’s governance and development policies.
Prem Singh Tamang’s journey began in 2013 when he formed the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha after rebelling against then-Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. Since then, much has changed, symbolized by the waters flowing down the Teesta and Rangeet rivers.
