BJP-Led NDA Secures Victory in All Five Assam Assembly Seats in By-Elections
Guwahati: The BJP-led NDA alliance secured an emphatic victory in Assam’s by-elections, winning all five Assembly constituencies. The results, declared on Saturday, reaffirmed the alliance’s strong foothold in the state. The constituencies that went to polls were Dholai, Sidli, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Behali.
The BJP clinched victories in four constituencies, while its allies bagged the remaining seat. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won the Bongaigaon seat, with Diptimayee Choudhury defeating Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha by a margin of 35,164 votes. Similarly, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), another ally of the BJP, triumphed in Sidli. UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma defeated Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) candidate Suddho Kumar Basumatary by 37,016 votes.
In Behali, BJP’s Diganta Ghatowal emerged victorious over Congress’s Jayanta Borah, securing a margin of 9,051 votes. The Samaguri constituency, traditionally a Congress stronghold, witnessed BJP candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma defeating Tanzil Hussain by a margin of 24,501 votes. This win was significant as Tanzil Hussain is the son of senior Congress leader and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain.
Dholai also went to the BJP, with Nihar Ranjan Das defeating Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha decisively , securing a margin of 9,098 votes. The results reflected the BJP’s effective campaign strategies and growing voter confidence.
These by-elections were necessitated after five legislators, including a cabinet minister, vacated their Assembly seats to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Among them, former BJP cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya, who won the Silchar Lok Sabha seat, vacated Dholai. Similarly, senior BJP leader Ranjit Dutta, now a Lok Sabha MP, left the Behali seat vacant.
The AGP, too, made gains in Parliament, with senior leader Phani Bhusan Choudhury winning the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat. However, the party lost Dhubri to Congress veteran Rakibul Hussain.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his gratitude through his microblogging site ‘X,’ stating, “We bow in gratitude to the people of Assam 🙏🏽 The NDA’s 5/5 victory in the current by-elections is a resounding testament to Assam’s unwavering support for Adarniya @narendramodi Ji’s vision of good governance and development. A special mention for Samaguri, a constituency with a 65% minority population, held by Congress for 25 years, now won by the BJP. This historic victory reaffirms people’s trust in our welfare agenda and their firm rejection of the Opposition’s divisive politics. My heartfelt thanks to the people for their steadfast support. We remain committed to building a Viksit Assam for all. A big shoutout to our dedicated Karyakartas who took our message of development to every booth!”
The BJP’s clean sweep in these by-elections underscores its growing influence and strategic acumen in Assam’s political landscape.
