Desk Report, January 28, 2024 – In a notable development ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam witnessed a substantial boost as several influential leaders from the state formally joined the party on Sunday. The joining ceremony took place at the BJP State headquarters in Guwahati’s Basistha.
Prominent leaders who officially became part of the BJP include former Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta, former Congress MLA from Khumtai constituency Bismita Gogoi, former president of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Dipanka Kumar Nath, former AASU vice-president Prakash Das, and others. Leaders from various parties, such as Congress, AAP, and Gana Shakti, also joined the BJP during the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Bismita Gogoi expressed her lack of confidence in the current leadership of the Congress, stating that the party cannot come to power in the next 100 years under the present leadership. She highlighted her dissatisfaction with the Congress’s treatment of women and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives for women’s security.

Dipanka Nath, another prominent figure joining BJP, considered this move as a new journey and emphasized the learning opportunities ahead. He credited the BJP for fulfilling demands, particularly in job creation for the youth, contrasting it with the Congress allegedly selling jobs for money.
Angkita Dutta criticized the current ideology of the Congress, stating that it revolves around rebranding Rahul Gandhi. She expressed disappointment with Rahul Gandhi’s lack of response to the demands for justice in Amguri, leading to her decision to join the BJP.
The event was attended by BJP State President Bhabesh Kalita, Assam cabinet ministers Jayanta Mallabaruah, Pijush Hazarika, MLAs Diganta Kalita, Manab Deka, and various other party members. The addition of these influential leaders is expected to significantly strengthen the BJP’s position in Assam.
