BSF Intensifies Border Security: Smugglers Arrested, Prohibited Goods Worth ₹48 Lakh Seized
Defending the country’s borders is among the most demanding tasks for any force, and the India-Bangladesh border presents unique challenges. With its complex geographical conditions and dense demographics, this international boundary is a hotspot for cross-border crimes.
Recently, there has been a concerning rise in smuggling and illegal activities along this border. Smugglers, often in organized syndicates, collaborate with Bangladeshi traffickers to transport gold, cattle, narcotics, cough syrup, and other restricted goods. Taking advantage of fog and poor weather conditions, they operate in villages near the border, including those in Cooch Behar (West Bengal), Dhubri, and South Salmara Mankachar (Assam). Smugglers have even attacked Border Security Force (BSF) personnel with sharp weapons and sticks, causing severe injuries during attempts to stop their illegal activities.
The BSF oversees the security of a 509-kilometer stretch of this international boundary, spanning from Cooch Behar in West Bengal to South Salmara Mankachar in Assam. To safeguard this crucial zone, 11 BSF battalions, alongside a small contingent of the Water Wing, remain deployed.
Despite facing harsh geographical and climatic conditions, especially during the rainy season, the BSF achieved significant successes in December 2024. They apprehended 11 Indian and one Bangladeshi smuggler. Additionally, they confiscated 2,800 Yaba tablets, rescued 437 cattle from smuggling operations, and seized prohibited goods valued at approximately ₹48 lakh.
BSF personnel work tirelessly around the clock, often under life-threatening circumstances, to maintain border security. Their duties include rescuing civilians during emergencies. For instance, they recently saved lives and property during a fire in a South Salmara Mankachar village. They also evacuated individuals requiring urgent medical attention, transporting them to nearby hospitals for timely care.
The rising activities of smugglers and anti-national elements underscore the sensitivity of this border. Nevertheless, the BSF remains steadfast in its mission to curb cross-border crimes and maintain security, showcasing unparalleled dedication and vigilance in safeguarding the nation.
