Central Government Allocates ₹716 Crore to Assam for Flood Recovery Efforts
Guwahati: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Tuesday that it has allocated ₹5,858.60 crore to assist 14 flood-affected states, including Assam. This funding comes as a central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and an advance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). Assam will receive ₹716 crore to support recovery efforts following heavy rainfall and landslides during the southwest monsoon.
The funds will be distributed as follows: Maharashtra will receive ₹1,492 crore, Andhra Pradesh ₹1,036 crore, Bihar ₹655.60 crore, and Gujarat ₹600 crore. Other states benefiting from this allocation include Himachal Pradesh with ₹189.20 crore, Kerala with ₹145.60 crore, and Manipur with ₹50 crore. Additionally, Mizoram will receive ₹21.60 crore, Nagaland ₹19.20 crore, Sikkim ₹23.60 crore, Telangana ₹416.80 crore, Tripura ₹25 crore, and West Bengal ₹468 crore.
This financial aid demonstrates the government’s commitment to support states dealing with the consequences of extreme weather. To ensure effective recovery, the MHA has deployed Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to various flood-affected states, including Assam, Mizoram, Kerala, Tripura, Nagaland, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Manipur. These teams are conducting on-the-spot assessments of damages. IMCTs will soon head to Bihar and West Bengal, which have also faced severe flooding.
After the IMCTs provide their assessment reports, additional financial support from the NDRF will be approved for the impacted states, following established protocols. The MHA highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s guidance, over ₹14,958 crore has already been disbursed to 21 states this year. This amount includes ₹9,044.80 crore from the SDRF, ₹4,528.66 crore from the NDRF, and ₹1,385.45 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF).
In addition to financial assistance, the Central Government has also provided extensive logistical support. This includes deploying NDRF teams, Army units, and Air Force resources to assist in recovery efforts across the flood-affected regions. This proactive approach aims to alleviate the hardships faced by those affected by natural calamities, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting states in their recovery and rebuilding processes.
