Chandipura Outbreak in Gujarat: 59 Deaths Among 148 AES Cases
Desk Report, August 01, 2024: The Chandipura virus outbreak has significantly impacted Gujarat, with 148 Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases reported. Among these, 140 cases are from Gujarat, resulting in 59 deaths. Chandipura virus has been confirmed in 51 cases.
Since June 2024, children under 15 have been the primary victims of AES in Gujarat. As of July 31, 2024, cases have also emerged in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. However, a decline in daily new cases has been noted since July 19, 2024.
To address the crisis, a National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) has been deployed in Gujarat. This team is assisting with public health measures and conducting a detailed epidemiological investigation. The Director General of Health Services and the Director of the National Center for Disease Control reviewed the situation. They were joined by officials from the Indian Council of Medical Research, and representatives from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.
Gujarat has initiated several public health measures, including insecticidal sprays for vector control, medical personnel sensitization, and timely case referrals. A joint advisory from the NCDC and NCVBDC is being issued to neighboring states reporting AES cases.
The Chandipura virus, part of the Rhabdoviridae family, causes outbreaks mainly during the monsoon season. It is transmitted by sand flies and ticks. Control measures include vector management, hygiene, and public awareness. The virus mostly affects children under 15, leading to severe symptoms such as fever, convulsions, coma, and sometimes death. While no specific treatment exists, symptomatic management and timely referrals can improve outcomes.
