Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Attends Doul Mahotsav at Barpeta Sattra
Desk Report, March 25, 2024: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma participated in the renowned Doul Mahotsav festivities at the Barpeta Sattra (Vaishnav) monastery in Barpeta district, a significant cultural event synonymous with Holi celebrations in Assam. On Monday, he visited the monastery and engaged in prayers for the well-being of the people.
In a statement shared on X, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude for being part of the traditional Doul Utsav in Barpeta. He emphasized the deep-rooted significance of this celebration in the hearts of Assamese people and extended an invitation for others to experience the festivities at Barpeta Sattra.
During his visit, the Chief Minister immersed himself in the vibrant atmosphere by listening to Holi geets performed by the monastery’s inhabitants. Holi, known as the festival of colors, takes on a distinctive form in Assam, particularly through the four-day celebration of Doul Mahotsav at Barpeta Sattra.

The commencement of the Doul festival, marked by the first day known as ‘Gondh,’ involves the lighting of a massive bonfire of reeds by the bhakats or disciples of the monastery in front of the main prayer hall, symbolizing the onset of festivities.
Chief Minister Sarma’s participation underscores the cultural richness and communal spirit embodied by such traditional celebrations, contributing to the preservation and appreciation of Assam’s cultural heritage.
