Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Cabinet Reshuffle Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections
Guwahati, June 7, 2024: In a significant political development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed plans for an impending ministry reshuffle, intended to infuse new energy into the administration ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. The announcement was made during a press conference held yesterday, where Chief Minister Sarma articulated his vision for a rejuvenated team to tackle the forthcoming electoral challenges.
“We will change our ministry and a new look will be given to it. We need to prepare the team for 2026 elections that will work with new energy,” stated Sarma. He emphasized that discussions with the central leadership have yet to commence, attributing the delay to the ongoing flood situation in the state. Despite this, the Chief Minister assured that the reshuffle is projected to take place by August 15.
The proposed reshuffle is expected to introduce at least three new members to the cabinet. This development comes in the wake of Minister Parimal Suklabaidya’s recent victory in the Lok Sabha elections, representing the Silchar constituency, which has left a ministerial position vacant. Sarma also hinted at possible changes in the departmental assignments of current ministers, suggesting a comprehensive restructuring of the ministry.
This anticipated cabinet overhaul underscores the Chief Minister’s commitment to revitalizing his administration and gearing up for the electoral battle in 2026. While final decisions are pending, the move is seen as a strategic effort to bring fresh faces and ideas into the government, enhancing its effectiveness and appeal to the electorate.
As Assam grapples with its flood crisis, the timing of the discussions with the central leadership remains uncertain. However, the Chief Minister’s announcement has set the stage for significant political maneuvers in the coming months.
