Victim Reclaims ₹70 Lakh in Cyber Fraud Incident with Aid of CID’s Relentless Efforts

Guwahati: In a significant case of cyber fraud, a victim was defrauded of ₹70 lakh on July 22, 2024, after being misled by a scammer posing as a FedEx employee. The fraudster claimed that a package sent by the victim to Taiwan was intercepted by the Cyber Crime Office in Mumbai and allegedly contained the illegal substance MDMA. Through a series of intimidating video and audio calls, supposedly from Mumbai’s Cyber Crime Office, the victim was threatened with severe legal consequences, prompting him to transfer a large sum to avoid repercussions.

The victim reported the incident through the 1930 cyber fraud helpline, reaching out to the Cyber Police Station (PS), CID. In response, the CID’s specialized cyber crime team launched an intensive investigation to trace the defrauded funds. Thanks to their swift and dedicated efforts, the CID team succeeded in recovering the entire amount of ₹70 lakh, restoring it to the victim’s account.

This successful recovery marks a significant achievement for the CID in its ongoing campaign against cyber fraud. In recent years, online fraud incidents involving impersonation and intimidation tactics have surged, and this case highlights the critical role of vigilance and prompt reporting. The CID has reiterated the importance of using official helplines, such as 1930, to report suspicious activities, allowing law enforcement to respond efficiently.

The authorities continue to encourage the public to exercise caution, especially when contacted by individuals posing as officials or requesting sensitive information. In this case, the CID’s Cyber PS has demonstrated its commitment to combatting cyber fraud, showcasing the effectiveness of their focused investigations and ensuring justice for victims.
