Guwahati; February 17, 2025: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a key meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan to review the recommendations of the high-level committee led by Justice (Retd.) Biplab Kumar Sarma. The meeting aimed to assess the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which seeks to protect the state’s indigenous communities.
The discussion with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) covered 39 out of 40 recommendations under the state government’s jurisdiction. Key issues included land rights, cultural preservation, and linguistic safeguards to secure the interests of Assam’s native population.
The Clause 6 committee submitted its report in 2020, proposing constitutional, legislative, and administrative measures to uphold Assamese identity. During the meeting, CM Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding indigenous communities while ensuring fair implementation of the recommendations.
AASU representatives urged swift action to protect Assamese culture and language from external influences. The discussions also focused on granting land rights to indigenous people and enforcing legal measures to prevent demographic imbalances.
