Rahul Gandhi as Brand Ambassador Could Control Assam’s Population Growth: CM Sarma
Desk Report, July 19, 2024: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed a provocative solution to the state’s population growth issue: appointing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the brand ambassador for a population control campaign.
In his remarks, Sarma argued that Gandhi’s involvement could lead to an immediate reduction in population growth. He stated, “It is the responsibility of the Congress to tackle the population issue in Assam because people listen to Congress leaders. If Rahul Gandhi becomes the brand ambassador for this campaign, we could see a significant decrease in population growth starting tomorrow.”
Sarma elaborated on Gandhi’s influence within certain communities in Assam, particularly in Muslim villages. He noted, “If not immediately, the change will come because they listen to him, not me. They view me as an adversary. In a Muslim village, if asked whether they would listen to Himanta Biswa Sarma or Rahul Gandhi, they would choose Gandhi. The same goes for comparisons with Narendra Modi.”
The Chief Minister underscored Gandhi’s potential impact on the issue, saying, “When it comes to population control, if anyone can make a difference, it is Rahul Gandhi and no one else.”
