Desk Report, February 16, 2024: The Congress party in Assam is poised to contest independently in 12 constituencies during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, as per insider sources. Once a dominant political force in the state, the party aims to reestablish its presence amidst a shifting political landscape. The decision to pursue a solo electoral strategy follows deliberations within the party’s leadership on the most effective approach to counter the ruling party’s influence. The names of the candidates representing the Congress in these constituencies are expected to be unveiled imminently.
Meanwhile, aligning with the Indian National Developmental Inclusive (INDI) Alliance, the Congress has opted to cede its Barpeta seat to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the Dibrugarh constituency seat to Lurin Jyoti Gogoi of the Assam Jatiya Parishad. It is noteworthy that following the fallout between Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and the Congress during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, the state unit of Congress has opted against forming any alliance with the Trinamool Congress.
This decision underscores a strategic electoral maneuver, demonstrating the Congress party’s confidence in its chosen candidates and its foresight for the impending polls in Assam. As the political landscape continues to evolve, observers will vigilantly monitor subsequent developments, including candidate announcements, and assess the broader implications of this strategic decision on the state’s electoral dynamics.
