Cyclone Remal Intensifying Over Bay of Bengal, IMD Issues Alerts
Desk Report, May 25, 2024: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a formal advisory indicating the escalating threat posed by Cyclone Remal, currently developing over the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. As per the latest update provided by the IMD at 9 pm on Friday, May 24, the depression in the Bay of Bengal is slated to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 25.
The depression has been observed to have moved in a north-northeastward direction at a pace of eight kilometers per hour over the past six hours. As of 5:30 pm on May 24, the center of the depression was pinpointed at approximately 650 kilometers south of Khepupara in Bangladesh, about 620 kilometers from the south-southeast of Sagar Islands in West Bengal, and roughly 670 kilometers south of Canning in West Bengal.
According to IMD projections, the cyclonic storm is anticipated to track a northward trajectory, with indications of further intensification into a severe cyclonic storm by the night of May 25th. By the subsequent day, May 26, wind speeds associated with the severe cyclonic storm are anticipated to reach up to 130 kilometers per hour.
The IMD’s forecast suggests a trajectory that could potentially see Cyclone Remal making landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara by midnight on May 26, as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speeds ranging from 110 to 120 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 130 kilometers per hour.
In light of these developments, the IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings for several regions, including West Bengal, Odisha, Andaman Islands, and northeastern states such as Mizoram, Tripura, South Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. These advisories are indicative of the imminent impact of Cyclone Remal and underscore the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness measures in potentially affected areas.
The designation of the impending cyclone as “Remal” has been conferred by the IMD in accordance with the established nomenclature protocols for cyclonic storms in the North Indian Ocean region.
As the situation continues to evolve, authorities and residents in the aforementioned regions are advised to closely monitor updates from the IMD and take necessary precautions to mitigate the potential risks posed by Cyclone Remal.
