Delhi Court Extends Arvind Kejriwal’s Judicial Custody Till July 3
Desk Report, June 19, 2024: The judicial custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been extended until July 3 by a Delhi court on Wednesday. Kejriwal has been incarcerated since April 1 in connection with a corruption case linked to the controversial Delhi liquor policy.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Kejriwal on March 21, citing allegations related to the now-defunct liquor policy. The authorities assert that Kejriwal was instrumental in crafting the policy and allegedly accepted bribes in exchange for liquor licenses. They claim that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received kickbacks amounting to Rs 100 crore, which were reportedly utilized to fund election campaigns in Goa and Punjab.
Despite his arrest, the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal interim bail on May 10, allowing him to campaign for elections. During this period, he conducted numerous rallies across the country. However, Kejriwal returned to custody on June 2 after the conclusion of his bail period.
The case has sparked significant political debate, with Kejriwal’s supporters alleging political vendetta, while his critics argue for stringent action against corruption. The extension of Kejriwal’s judicial custody underscores the ongoing complexity and high stakes of the legal proceedings surrounding the Delhi liquor policy scandal.
